New Year, New Mantra.
About a month ago I stumbled upon this quotation: “Never, ever insist yourself to someone who continuously overlooks your worth.” I immediately fell in love with it.
For the past 2 years, in lieu of making a New Year’s resolution, I chose a New Year’s mantra. Something to aspire for throughout the year, to repeat to myself when things became a touch bleak, and something to allow to blossom within me during the blissfully happy times. Both mantras are still very dear and close to me. In fact, they are a part of me; I tattooed the brief, five word phrases on my sides.
Mantra for 2010: Hope will never be silent.
Mantra for 2011: Life rewards the risk taker.
This brings me to my mantra for 2012… Though I ardently adore the above quotation, after thinking on it for a couple weeks, something began to bother me. It’s more than to never, ever insist yourself on those who overlook your worth. As the incredibly wise and silly Dr. Seuss once wrote (in Green Eggs and Ham, I think?), “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.” Never, ever insist yourself to anyone. If they see, understand, and celebrate your worth, it will not be required to insist yourself upon them.
And so, mantra for 2012: Never insist yourself to anyone.
(Though time shall tell as to whether or not this year’s mantra insists itself on my body; permanence through the art of tattooing…)
